Greg Love | Spirit of Burgundy

"A Merenda Sinoira is an old Piedmontese pre supper tradition of taking a light snack with a glass of wine. It is also the name of a micro producer formed by three friends, Marco Vola, Alberto Sevetti and Federico Alessandria. Last night they invited me to join them for a Merenda Sinoira at Da Renza in Castiglione Falletto, to meet the team and their better halves and to taste their wines. They produce four wines, of which three were on the table: A Langhe Nebbiolo called "Sapel", which means a path leading into the vines. Sapel is made from 30-year-old Nebbiolo vines planted between Roddino and Serralunga d'Alba and aged in a 2,000 litre cask for six months. The 2017 Merenda Sinoira Langhe Nebbiolo Sapel has a pleasant nose of soft red fruits, iris flowers and dusky brown spices. The palate is surprisingly concentrated and punchy, with juicy pomegranate, plum and violet-scented aromatics and is easy to appreciate. Their 2015 Merenda Sinoira Barolo "Kidi" is their first Barolo vintage. The Nebbiolo fruit comes from 45-year-old vines in the Novello Ravera Cru and from 35-year-old vines from the Badarina Cru in Serralunga d'Alba. They use a mixture of delestage and remontage during the 25-day vinification cycle, with a short period of submerging the cap and the wine is then aged in a 1,000-litre Slavonian oak cask for two years. 1,300 bottles made. The 2015 Merenda Sinoira Barolo "Kidi" has a pretty nose of red and blue fruits, Mediterranean herbs and dusty brown spices. The bright palate of pomegranate, rose hips, anise, blood orange and brown spices has a pleasant sap and savour with a touch of dusty earthiness. The tannins sit agreeably within the structure and the juicy finish is not overly long, but this is a good start for their first vintage. Their Merenda Sinoira "Cuggia" Brut Metodo Clasico is a Method Classico dry fizz with a simple and easy-drinking sparkle that suits a pre-dinner drink. These lads are a good bunch that enjoy a laugh and we had a nice pizza supper together in Monforte d'Alba later in the evening. It's a big adventure building up a wine business and I wish Marco Vola, Alberto and Frederico and their partners all the very best."

Ciao Greg, ti aspettiamo per un nuovo brindisi. Buone Feste!
